Crisis Line Volunteer Information

TRAINING INFORMATION

PATH's training program is an experience that can benefit everyone. We teach you a wide range of skills including active listening, suicide assessment and problem-solving. There are 3 ways that the training helps prepare you for the job.

Classroom Training

You will attend class each week (3-hours). A variety of topics are presented by PATH staff and community professionals; the subject matter is both helpful and interesting.  A training supervisor, aptly titled Pathfinder, will guide your progress and facilitate the small group learning that takes place. This allows you to gain added insight and experience. The learning process includes "hands on" training.

Phoneroom Training

You will sign up to work a 3-hour phoneroom shift each week of training; experienced volunteer will supervise you. You monitor actual calls and observe the process of dealing with real-life situations. You have flexibility in choosing a shift, since we're open seven days a week. However, phoneroom shifts fill up fast; send in your application early to ensure getting the shift time that is best for your schedule.

The PATH Manual

This book provides you with the necessary background to handle calls of all types. Reading assignments and exercises are given weekly; this manual is required reading outside of the classroom and phoneroom training.

As you can see, the PATH training program is highly-structured and complete; it enables you to handle all calls with confidence.
